Developing a healthy relationship with food is a top priority for me, but I recognise that there’s a fine line between embracing the passion I have for food and what it can offer me, and letting it control, dictate and hold all power over how I live and what I think about myself.
Four years ago, baking became a really destructive, disordered behaviour for me. I would spend HOURS creating the most lavish and indulgent cupcakes and cakes for my friends, only to never allow myself to have even the smallest taste of them.
I would trawl the internet for recipes and save HUNDREDS of photos of sweet treats and ‘food porn’ - but would never once dream of letting myself even make or eat these ‘bad’ foods.
I essentially turned my passion for baking into a form of self-torture and control, and developed an obsessive and wholly unhealthy relationship with food. I’ve come a long way since then, and it has been truly empowering to revisit my love for baking and prove to myself that I’ve developed a much healthier relationship with food.
Now, I’ve come to find baking a really creative, fun and productive outlet for me to respect my body and express my love for food. I love creating new recipes, trying new combinations and actually ALLOWING myself to taste everything, lick the bowl clean and finish off a huge batch of treats I’ve made. It’s gone from being a really stressful, disordered and damaging behaviour for me, to a completely therapeutic, mindful and liberating hobby.
I am learning so much about the ingredients I put into my body, I'm realising I can eat A TON of untracked food without guilt, and I can finally take pride in my creations and enjoy them for myself.
